Losing weight sucks.
Err, let me rephrase that.
Going through the process of losing weight sucks. Actually losing weight is pretty awesome.
While you should go around looking for magic potions or silver bullets to do all of your weight loss for you (because the don’t exist), there are some cool little tricks that you can add to your toolbox to really get the most out of your weight loss journey.
Nothing in this post alone will help you drop all the weight that you want, but they do provide help. Think of them as a spotter at the gym, always helping you out in the smallest ways.
One great thing about all of these solutions is that they also do a great job of helping you out mentally. One of the greatest struggles of losing weight is staying motivated. It’s great that you ate a salad for lunch, but finishing off dinner with an entire cheesecake will only set you back.
Taking a spoonful of something that can help you lose weight lets your mind know that you are in it to win it.
So what are these spoonful of things you can take? Let’s find out.
1. A Spoonful of Dark Cacao Powder for Antioxidants
I’m not big on chocolate, but my brother loves it. I’m sure you’ve heard of the benefits of dark chocolate, but did you know that dark cacao powder is just as awesome for you?
The reason why is because it is packed with antioxidants. Another benefit is that if you have a massive sweet tooth (like me) that it will help satisfy that some.
Why can’t you just drink chocolate milk? Won’t it have the same benefits? The problem with that is chocolate milk is pumped full of sugar. Dark cacao powder lacks all of that sugar so it works out well for you.
You probably don’t want to take a spoonful of it straight up. Instead, add a spoonful into your smoothie or if you want a healthy version of hot chocolate add it to a glass of hot water.
2. A Spoonful of Coconut Oil to Burn More Fat
With the amount of coconut oil that my family has gone through over the past year you would swear that we owned stock in coconut farms (do those exist?).
Coconut oil seems to be an all-around awesome source for everything. Eat it, drink it, wear it, or do whatever with it. Anything you can think of has already been done with it and it’s probably extremely healthy for you.
Coconut oil contains something called medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which help to increase energy expenditure. One study has shown that 15-30g of MCTs per day increased the 24-hour energy expenditure by 5%. That may not sound like a lot, but that equates to 130 calories per day.
For all of the ladies in the house, I have some really good news for you. In another study of 40 women with abdominal obesity, supplementing 30 mL of coconut oil per day led to a reduction in waist circumference in a 12-week period.
How should you go about consuming coconut oil? Just get a tablespoon straight from the jar and eat it.
Simple as that.
3. A Spoonful of Lemon Juice for Vitamin C
Lemon is an awesome zero-calorie food to consume so it only makes sense that lemon juice is just as awesome.
One of the best ways to start your morning is by drinking a glass of lemon water. This can help minimize your morning cravings while also having the added benefits of boosting your immune system, hydrating the body, and boosting brain function.
All you need to do is add 1 tablespoon of fresh squeezed lemon into 8oz of water.
4. A Spoonful of Matcha Green Tea Powder for Fat Burning
Time for a little heart to heart. I hate tea. I hate tea in all forms. It doesn’t matter the flavor.
Tea is disgusting to me and this is blasphemy from a boy that grew up in the South.
So when I talk about the benefits of Matcha Green Tea, I’m not doing so from personal experience. In fact, the only time I’ve had Match Green Tea was when it was served like this:
That was at a lounge and it also included vodka, ginger beer, and Cardamine liqueur.
It was delicious.
Anyways, back to why this stuff is good for you. Most you know the benefits of green tea and how great it is for the body. Matcha powder is like the little secret tea that most people haven’t heard about.
It’s a unique tea that is grown in the hills of Japan. It’s really fancy because when the leaves are growing, the amount of light given to them is controlled so that means the plants need to produce more chlorophyll. This causes them to get a bright green hue.
That’s cool but what can this stuff help with? The body’s process of burning calories is called thermogenesis. The rate at which your body usually does this is between 8% – 10%. With matcha powder, this number jumps up to 35% – 43%!
All you need to do is add a spoonful to some warm water and you are good to go.
5. A Spoonful of Cinnamon for Better Blood Sugar Levels
This one always throws me for a loop because cinnamon is sweet so I always think that anything that you consume that is sweet will raise your blood sugar levels.
Apparently, that isn’t the case. Cinnamon actually helps to regulate your blood sugar levels and this is important because it can help to prevent cravings that might occur from a sugar crash.
You can add a spoonful of cinnamon to almost anything you eat that you think it will go well with. Of course is awesome in smoothies as well. If you want to kill two birds with one stone then add it to your morning lemon water.
6. A Spoonful of Cayenne Pepper for Increased Metabolism
I love spicy foods. I’m not at superhero levels yet where I can eat anything spicy, but I’m getting there.
Cayenne pepper is great because it contains a powerful nutrient called capsaicin. This nutrient is great for burning fat because it does two things really well:
- Increases metabolism by heating up the body
- Stops cravings from occuring
If you don’t have any cayenne pepper laying around (shame on you) then throw a little Sriracha on your eggs. Don’t have Sriracha or cayenne pepper? Double shame on you.
7. A Spoonful of Fish Oil for Better Blood Flow
Fish oil has always weirded me out. Not because of what it is but because of the name.
Fish oil has been used since the dawn of time it feels like. It’s one of the most well-researched supplements around. Here are some of the benefits that people have found with fish oil:
- Reduces inflammation
- Thickens hair
- Improved skin
- Increased heart health
- Improved digestion
- Joint pain reduction
It is suggested that you get 1000mg of fish oil daily. You can do that through supplements or by eating more fish like salmon, tuna, cod, and halibut.
8. A Spoonful of Apple Cider Vinegar to Control Cravings
We’ve already written about the health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar on this site. Next to coconut oil it is the supplement that you will see the most around my house.
I’m dead serious. If you came over and told me that there was a bottle of apple cider vinegar in each room in my house I wouldn’t be surprised.
So why is it helpful in losing weight?
- It suppresses cravings
- Helps prevent fat accumulation
- Regulates blood sugar levels
It’s really an incredible liquid.
When consuming it I suggest adding it to a glass of water to lessen the taste. It can be quite powerful, but some people have no problem taking a shot of it every morning.
9. A Spoonful of Ginger from Improved Metabolism and Digestion
My first encounter with ginger was when I had sushi. I loved it. That was a lifetime ago and I didn’t find out about its health qualities until much later in life.
The second time I encountered it was in ginger beer. I don’t think that counts as understanding the goodness that ginger provides for your body.
So what is ginger good for?
- Fighting nausea
- Reducing muscle pain
- Lowers blood sugar
- Helps with indigestion
The reason why you would care about ginger is because it helps to improve metabolism and digestion. Two things that are vital for weight loss.
10. A Spoonful of Cumin Powder for 3x the Weight Loss
In a recent study, two groups of women were placed in the same weight loss routine with one exception. One group was given 3g of cumin daily while the other was not.
The NOT group lost 4.91% body fat which isn’t bad.
The lucky cumin group lost 14.64% body fat. 3x as much!
Why did this happen?
Because cumin helps to increase metabolism and an increased metabolism means more fat being burned.
A Spoonful of…
Isn’t it awesome that there are natural remedies out there that can help with weight loss? Even better is that you don’t need to consume them in large quantities. Just figure out how to incorporate them into your daily routine to get their benefits.

We understand that your body isn’t like other people’s. How? By calculating your lean body mass vs fat percentage. It will show you what foods you should be eating to get the most out of your diet.
In addition, it also provides you with workouts and motivational tools to make sure you stay on track.
