Dreams are something everybody should have.
Everyone has different dreams and goals they want to achieve in life. Sometimes those dreams change. That’s perfectly understandable because the circumstances in our lives are constantly changing.
The world around us is constantly changing every second so why should we expect our lives to remain the same every single day? That isn’t going to happen.
The dreams you had for yourself may be entirely different from what they were a couple months ago. You may see yourself being one way, then out of nowhere, something in your mind changes direction completely.
The Beginning of a Dream
“Am I wrong for thinking out the box from where I stay?”
The start of every dream is exciting because you say to yourself that you are going to do whatever you have to do to make that dream happen. But it isn’t until you actually start seeking that dream when you find out how difficult it may actually be to make it happen.
Now some of you may have been fortunate enough to grow up and have a lot of things fall into your lap. Many of you are probably the opposite.
For those of you that have always had it “easy,” things will not always be that way and for those that have had to struggle a lot, you will not always have to struggle.
It can be hard seeing people around you start achieving what they’ve always wanted to achieve. In fact, it can be more than hard.
You see your life going in one direction, then one thing leads to another and that leads to something else happening and the next thing you know you’ve already taken 3 or 4 steps back.
Things May Not Go as Planned
“Am I wrong, for thinking that we could be something for real?”
You may see yourself being with somebody then one day, they are out of your lives in a flash.
You may see yourself looking and being a certain way, but a few decisions later, you realize you aren’t even close to what you want to be.
Why are these dreams you had that seemed so easy not so long ago just not working out?
This is tough to answer. There may not be a single answer to this question. There could be multiple reasons.
Dreams are not meant to be easy and when they aren’t handed to you right away it could be really easy to just tell yourself to give up and try to focus on something else.
Being Brought Down but Continuing to Fight
“If one thing I know, I’ll fall but I’ll grow”
Trust me, I feel like my dreams have been shattered multiple times and it put me in a rough place.
Multiple dreams, of all types, just not coming together. Heartbreak, moving around, being told you aren’t good enough, all things that put me in a very dark place in my life. I’d be lying if I said I’m okay with how everything is now.
I’m usually the one that smiles and tries to laugh about everything, but a lot of that is a lie too. There was a time not too long ago where I felt like I was at the lowest point in my life. Like nothing could get worse. Things just continued to fall apart and unravel.
I would say that I was 100% broken. My life seemed like shit to me. Here I am, 24 years old, supposed to be out in the world getting my life together, and I couldn’t even be out on my own for more than a few months at a time. Hell, I’m still struggling with that aspect of my life, but I can say that things are slowly getting better.
Some days are way worse than others, it’s a constant mental battle. You would never be able to tell that if you met me (unless you’re my mom, but she knows everything).
My dreams are starting to change. I am starting to see that maybe my dreams before weren’t meant to be, maybe they were just stepping stones that I had to learn from. That doesn’t take away the pain or sorrow, but it happened for a reason.
Everything happens for a reason.
Figuring out that reason is never easy and you may never fully comprehend it, but if you don’t let it stop you from living life then you will start to slowly improve.
No matter how bad things may seem in your life, have a dream that gives you something to fight for. If you truly start to pursue it with all of your might, all the bad that has happened will be a thing of the past.
Everyone Has a Struggle
“That’s just how I feel. Trying to reach the things that I can’t see”
Wouldn’t it be nice if there was something that told us, “This is what you’re supposed to be doing and this is what you need to do to get there!”
Too bad that’ll never happen. Life is for us to figure out. We have to go through all of the trials and errors before achieving something great.
This is where many people stop. They do not realize that the path to achieving a dream is a big winding road, it is not a straight one.
If it were that easy to achieve anything, it wouldn’t be nearly as satisfying and you may not be able to learn as much through your experiences. Going through the rough patches is awful, but for some reason, life just can’t be easy. There always has to be some kind of struggle for people.
No matter how easy some people seem to have it, there is always more to the story. Always! For many successful people that we get to see every day, all we get to see is them in all their glamor. We never get to see their journey. We rarely get to understand how they got to where they are.
Their life was never as easy as it may seem now. They had their dreams and they did everything they could to achieve them. They did not let any setbacks stop them.
That is what separates the “normal” people from the people that seem to have it all. When these people were knocked back a step, they decided to take three bigger steps forward. Try and try again.
We’ve all heard of the saying, “If you fall off the horse, you get right back on.” That’s what these people did. They got right back on and pushed themselves even harder.
Many people will continue to have the same dreams even if they fail, but many decide to not push as hard. Some may flat out give up.
If you have a dream, no matter how wild it may seem, why not try to make it happen?
All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you – Walt Disney
Learn From the Past
“Walk, walk, don’t look back, always do what you decide”
The universe may be trying to tell you something when you have a setback. It could be telling you that you aren’t ready for what you want to achieve yet.
Like Walt Disney said, the kick could be just what you need to reset everything, re-focus, and make that push to what you need to do.
The dreams I have now, I want so bad, just like every other dream I’ve had. The setbacks I have already experienced in my life are now wisdom I can use moving forward. I know now that grinding is not an option, it’s a necessity.
If you don’t learn from your past setbacks, how can you grow as a person? How can you achieve what you truly want to if you don’t learn from the past? What’s the point of living if you are going to stay stagnant for your entire life?
Will You Lift Yourself Back Up?
“Fight for yours and don’t let go, don’t let them compare you, no”
It’s one thing knowing that you have to grind, but it can be easy to think you are pushing yourself when you have no other kind of reference. Once you see that your previous “grind” wasn’t anywhere near where it needs to be, that is when you start to actually grind.
Humans have a tendency to overestimate themselves. We seem to think we are better or doing more than we actually are.
Everyone is guilty of it.
That’s why so many people take it personally when you criticize them about their work ethic or what they need to be improving on.
People try to live in the clouds and it hurts them when they get hit with a dose of reality and they see they are on the same level as everyone else.
When you get hit with this sledgehammer, you have two choices. You can either let the hit happen and stay on the ground or you can do everything in your power to fight back and push towards your dreams like you initially planned.
Like I said earlier, the path is a long and winding path. It’s definitely more like a marathon than a sprint.
How do you win this marathon? You have to know that you aren’t going to be the best right away. It takes training. It takes learning. It takes becoming a student of life.
You’re never going to know everything you need, but you can learn enough to the point where you can reach the base of your dream. The rest is climbing to the mountain top that is beyond the clouds.
Dream big! Have the biggest dream possible. Have a dream for all aspects of your life.
Know that the dream will not come easy. There will be some bumps in the road and there will definitely be some setbacks. The important thing to remember is that even after the setback, you can’t give up. The dream still lives on in your soul. Keep that burning desire to make your dream happen.
They Weren’t Always Celebrities
“Am I tripping for having a vision?”
When Oprah was 22 years old, she got fired from her TV reporter job and told that she was “unfit for television.”
Steven Spielberg was rejected from film school not once, not twice, but three times.
Stephen King was rejected over 30 times for his book, “Carrie.” He is now one of the best-selling authors and has had many of his books made into movies.
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was on welfare before she was able to achieve her dream of getting one of her novels published.
Walt Disney was told that he lacked imagination and that a mouse would never be able to work. He later turned that mouse into a character that all of us know and love and created a theme park that is a joy to all kids.
Imagine if these people gave up on their dreams when they were rejected and ridiculed. Our world would be completely different.
We wouldn’t have been able to experience one of the greatest talk shows on TV for over 25 years.
We would have never fallen in love with E.T., we would have never feared giant sharks in the water (Jaws), and we never would’ve believed that dinosaurs could walk the Earth again (Jurassic Park).
We would have never gotten the chance to experience the world of witches and wizards.
We would have never seen how one mouse can cause so many emotions in you at one time while simultaneously getting you to believe that any dream you have can become a reality.
Think about it. All of these people were at a low point in their lives. A low point that could’ve easily made them say, “I quit.” They were probably way worse off than we are at this point in our lives.
They could’ve stopped and let their setbacks create a new life for them that would’ve been less fulfilling and probably leave an empty feeling inside of them for a lifetime.
They decided that all of the bad that happened in their lives wasn’t going to stop them. They knew that working harder was the only solution. Not giving up and going a different direction in their lives. They had their dream and did what they could to achieve it.
“My prediction: Imma be on top of the world”
Dreams give us something to live for. They give us more purpose in life.
There is nothing more satisfying than achieving something that you worked tirelessly for.
That’s what has to be done, though. You have to work tirelessly. You may lose some sleep, you may have to sacrifice a little bit of fun time here and there, but it all pays off in the end.
Hard work always pays off. There are going to be times where it seems like your dreams are never going to happen, but that is when you need to push harder. That may be when you are closest to actually getting what you want.
Remember that setbacks may happen, but believe that your dream is worth fighting for and that you can overcome anything that is thrown your way.
Any dream worth having is a dream worth fighting for – Charles Xavier (X-Men)
