13 Ways to Improve Your Confidence

Confidence is something that everyone struggles with at one point or another in their lives. It’s just a part of life. You may be struggling to gain some confidence right now.

This can be pretty scary because you may not be sure how to get out of this rut that you’re in. Things may not be easy, but there are things you can do that make climbing out of the rut a little easier.

These tips will help you gain a little more confidence. They will change your mood. They will psychologically make you more confident.

13. Smile

This sounds almost too good to be true. It can’t be that easy.

Not saying that smiling is going to make you a confident person, but it is a good place to start.

Just a simple smile, no matter what kind of mood you’re in can help you out. A lot of people may be throwing a fake smile around, but it’s something that is infectious.

Seeing somebody else smile can immediately change your mood. It can put a smile on your face. So, when you smile, for whatever reason, you may be causing somebody else to smile.

When you notice people around you in a good mood, you’ll notice that the world isn’t such a bad place and you can’t help but feel better about yourself. This allows you to be more confident.

12. Try New Things

Maybe there’s something that you’ve always wanted to do but just haven’t done it yet. Maybe you see something online or in the newspaper that looks pretty fun.

Do it.

You aren’t going to grow as a person staying in your comfort zone. You have to broaden your horizons. When you aren’t scared of doing new things, you’ll see how much better you feel about life in general.

“When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things.” – Joe Namath

Anything outside of your regular routine can work wonders for you. Go to a new restaraunt, go to a different club, try a new drink.

These new things can be considered as conquering fears of getting outside of your comfort zone. Your confidence grows exponentially with the more new things you try. You don’t have to love everything you try either. Allowing your mind to think get over a slight fear of change will give you the confidence you need for each day.

11. Stand Tall

By this I mean actually stand tall. Stand straight up. Body language is a huge part of confidence. When you can display confidence and have other people notice it, you’ll feel yourself getting more confident.

When you are walking around, have the same posture. Walk like you have a purpose in this life, because you do. Walk with the confidence that is inside of you, even if you don’t feel it yet.

The confidence will come out eventually. You don’t need to force it out. Confidence will show up when you do the right things.

Psychologically, changing your body’s posture, standing tall, and walking with a purpose allows your subconscious to think you’re more confident. And all of this comes from you standing straighter.

10. Make Eye Contact

When you are in a conversation with a person, look them in the eyes. Make eye contact. Show them that you are genuinely interested in what they are saying or make it clear that you are talking to them.

Yes, it can be awkward at times, especially if you aren’t much of a people person, but you will give off confident vibes. People appreciate when you are engaged with them when it comes to conversations.

People love knowing that you are paying attention to them. Yet another reason why eye contact is so important. Humans just naturally crave attention. Eye contact shows that you are paying attention to one another and it creates a sense of confidence that won’t go away as long as the conversation is continuing.

9. Clear Out Clutter

If you have a cluttered space around you, you’ll have a cluttered mind. It’s just that simple.

Some of you may say that you work better in a messy area or that you don’t like when places are too clean, well news flash, that’s bullshit!

When you are in a cluttered area, you aren’t nearly as efficient with your work. Eventually, this will come back to bite you in the butt. You won’t get as much work done and at some point, you’ll see that deadlines are coming up faster and faster yet you have nothing that could even be presented as decent work.

This drops your confidence level so much.

Keep everything around you as clean and clutter free as possible. At least have an organized mess. Don’t just have random stuff lying around everywhere.

When you aren’t being distracted by the mess that was around you, you’ll have a clearer mind. You can think things through better. You can get more work done. You will basically be oozing confidence.

8. Find Yourself

This tip is probably one of the most difficult ones to do. You have to do what you can to try and find what your purpose is. If you can do this, you will have new found sense of confidence that will never go away.

A lot of people go through life never knowing their purpose in it. It’s understandable because finding your purpose may be one of the most difficult things to do. You really have to do some soul searching.

Finding yourself is going to take some time so it’s something that you need to do as you’re still trying to live your life. Don’t spend too much time trying to find your purpose. Most people that really try to go find what their purpose is end up not finding it. You can’t try too hard. You might as well not really try to find your purpose at all. It’s something that may have to just come to you.

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why” – Mark Twain

Relating to what Mark Twain said, you have to be able to recognize when you find your purpose. You can’t let this moment pass you by. When you this moment happen, you’ll just know. Everything about that moment feels right. Nothing can take away from the moment you realize what you’re supposed to do in life.

7. Never Look Down On Yourself

Raise your hand if you’re your own biggest critic? You don’t have to actually raise your hand, but it’s good to realize you are more than likely harder on yourself than others are on you. You can be your own best friend and your worst enemy.

Most of the time, we are our worst enemy. We get down on ourselves way too easily. We expect to do great things all the time, which we should, but it is a near impossibility to do that.

Expect greatness, but don’t be disappointed when the greatness doesn’t happen. Don’t beat yourself up over it. This will only set you back. You drop your own confidence when you do this.

There’s a lesson to be learned when you don’t do as well as you think you should. A lesson that can make you grow as a person.

You can be angry at yourself for not doing as well as you wanted, but constantly beating yourself up because of it won’t get you anywhere. If you want to be able to grow and be more confident, you have to accept that you didn’t do so well, learn from it, and say that you’re going to improve yourself no matter what.

If you are going to beat yourself up over something, do it for a couple minutes and move on. Put it behind you and keep moving forward. That is the only way you will be able to become more confident about anything you do.

6. Listen to Songs That Make You Happy

You’ll be surprised at how much a song can change your mood. Don’t listen to your favorite songs, just because they may not be the happiest songs. Listen to songs that will bring a smile to your face the second you hear it come on.

A personal favorite of mine is “Shake it Off” by my girl Taylor Swift.

Songs like this are an automatic mood changer. When you feel happier, you are more confident in what you do.

Give it a try. Go ahead and have a concert in your bathroom. Jam out. Sing like nobody is listening (let’s be honest, you probably hope nobody is listening anyway). Force yourself to have a good time with the music.

When you’re done, your mood will be significantly different. Embrace that feeling. You may even have a certain glow about you that shows everyone around you how confident you really are.

5. Trust The Process of Life

By this I mean that no matter what you do, time isn’t going to stop, life is going to keep moving forward. You have to trust everything that is happening around you.

I am a firm believer in everything that happens, happens for a reason. You may never know what that reason is, but there’s a reason.

Think about it like this, everything you do or everything that happens to you is part of the path to life. Every little decision you make, everything that happens leads you down a path on the journey of life.

It’s up to you to continue down that path or stay still. Remember, when you aren’t moving forward in life, you aren’t growing as a person, and when you aren’t growing as a person, there is no way you can have the confidence you should have.

4. Be Active

Yes, be active. As active as possible. Go outside and go for a long run. Go to they gym and lift some weights.

It has been proven that working out makes you happier. Happier people tend to be much more confident in life.

Being active is a great stress reliever. How many people do you know that are stressed out all the time are also extremely confident? My guess is that you don’t know anybody like that. What should you conclude now, less stress leads to having more confidence.

Not saying that you are going to be the most confident person around, but like many of these other tips, it is a good start. One specific thing isn’t going to make you super confident, it’s going to be the accumulation of a lot of tiny factors that will help you be the most confident person you can be.

3. Test Yourself Physically

This goes along with being active. Don’t be scared to push yourself physically. Test yourself. Do things you didn’t think you could do. Your body is capable of doing so much more than you think.

You’ll probably surprise yourself with what you can do. Think about how much confidence you’ll give yourself when you see that you can conquer whatever you set your mind to.

Confidence is something that you don’t need anybody else to gain. It’s a mental state that only you can give yourself. You set your confidence level. Testing yourself and showing yourself that you are capable of more is a good way to gain more confidence.

I believe that humans are always capable of more. There are no limits to what we can do. There are no limits to what you can do. The only way to expand your limits is to push through your old ones. You have to test yourself. Set seemingly impossible feats for yourself and watch how easily you can conquer each and every one of them.

2. Trust Your Capabilities

You know what you can do right now. Even if you haven’t expanded your horizons yet, you should know for a fact exactly what you’re really good at and what you aren’t so good at.

There are going to be times where you may struggle with the things you’re good at. This isn’t a time to get discouraged. You know you’re good at it so you just have to trust in your capabilities. Trust that it’s just not the best day. Understand that you will get back to your normal self when it comes to what you’re good at.

One bad day at work doesn’t mean you’re bad at your job. It’s just a bad day. It happens to everyone.

When you realize that you are good at what you are doing, you will be able to trust what is going on. You can trust yourself. When you are able to trust what you can do, you will have much more confidence.

1. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Out of everything on this list, this one can possibly be the one that sets you back the most and can drain you of any and all confidence. Don’t compare yourself to others.

You aren’t anybody but you. You don’t live somebody else’s life. Nobody lives your life.

Don’t look at a celebrity and wonder why you aren’t where they are in their lives. Don’t look at your friend and try to figure out why they may have a better life than you.

Doing this is only going to drag you down. You aren’t making yourself any better when you are doing these things.

Really think about it, what good is it going to do when you are comparing your life to somebody else’s success. It’s a waste of time, there is no point in doing it. The less you worry about others and the more you focus on yourself, the better you will feel.

You can be happy for others and what they have accomplished, but don’t compare what you have done to what they have done. Life gets better when you aren’t trying to live up to the successes of other people.

Let the Confidence Out

If you are a person that struggles with confidence in any aspect of life, try these tips out. It is no guarantee that you will be as confident as you can be, but it is a good start.

You are the only one that determines your confidence level.

Confidence is in every single one of us. Don’t shy away from trying to be over confident. Allow it to come out. Be confident in yourself and what you can do.

You are capable of much more than you think and if all you have to do is pull that little bit of confidence you have in yourself out to the open, do it!
